There are many reasons why people become vegetarians, some are for health reasons, some are environmental, others for animal welfare. Vegetarianism is to many people not just a diet, but a different way of thinking, and a different lifestyle. Meat contains absolutely nothing the human body cannot obtain perfectly from a vegetarian diet. Avoiding meat is one of the best and simplest ways to cut down your fat consumption. Modern farm animals are deliberately fattened up to increase profits. Eating meat and animal fat increases your chances of having a heart attack or developing cancer. There are millions cases of food poisoning recorded every year. The great majority are caused by eating meat. Half the rainforest in the world have been destroyed to clear ground to graze cattle to make beefburgers. You can lose weight by avoiding saturated fat in meat, butter and the animal fat. Vegetarians are usually fitter than meat eaters. many of the world's most successful athletes are vegetarian.
ABOUT VEGETARIAN TIMES
The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.
—Charles Darwin, English naturalist (1809–1882)
Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself.
—James A. Froude, English historian (1818–1894)
If you visit the killing floor of a slaughterhouse, it will brand your soul for life.
—Howard Lyman, author of Mad Cowboy
A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral.
—Leo Tolstoy, Russian novelist (1828–1910)
